The Future of Language and Translation Services in South Africa

A vast majority of South African language and translation services expenditure over the past few years was concentrated around the implementation of the new school curriculum, the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS).

The curriculum changes meant that publishers had to create new textbooks, which increased the demand for freelance editing, translation, proofreading as well as project management of entire publishing functions.  With this process in the final stages of implementation, many in the language and translation industry wonder what the future holds.

We at IL Consultancy believe that for those with the insight and expertise, the future holds many exciting projects in the area of language and translation services.

The e-learning industry is in its infancy in South Africa, but already many schools and publishers are implementing e-learning programmes. IL Consultancy has had the privilege to assist in the editing, proofreading and rich media development of epub material for the South African publishing industry and we’re excited to continue playing a role in its burgeoning growth and development.

Globally, e-learning is a $56.2 billion global industry, set to double in the next two to five years as more communities and businesses employ e-learning to obviate the difficulties associated with traditional teaching methods, and some of the costs too. Find out more about it in our blog, E-learning: A panacea for South Africa’s education problems?

Another future prospect is strengthening business and investment ties globally, particularly with China, which stands to benefit the language and translation industry in South Africa on two fronts. An increase in business investment and activity leads to increases in language and translation work.

An increase in editingproofreading and translation of the following is expected:

  • Business and Tender Documents
  • Corporate Social Responsibility Documents
  • Trade Contracts
  • Corporate Newsletters
  • Social Media Posts in a variety of local and international languages.
